BANGALORE, JAN. 22. Opener Ali Murtaza's 109 (120b, 11x4) and Ravi Kanth Shukla's unbeaten 40 (12b, 2x4, 4x6) set the base for defending champion India's 71-run victory over Pakistan in a Asia Cup under-17 tournament Group I second phase match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday.

India scored 291 for four in 45 overs and bowled out Pakistan for 220 despite rival skipper Nasir Jamshed's 76. The host posted its third successive victory while Pakistan had two wins and a loss. Both teams entered the semifinals to be held here on January 25.

The Indian openers and southpaws, Ali Murtaza (109, 120b, 11x4) and Uday Kaul (59), piled on 118 in 22 overs. Uday donned the aggressor's role while Murtaza was content to build his innings. Uday, however, failed to control his impetuousness and succumbed in his attempt to take a non-existent single.

At the other end, the busy Murtaza guided the spinners in a fine arc between third-man and sweeper cover while sharing run-a-ball partnerships with Ravi Raj Patil and Piyush Chawla. He tapped seamer Tahzeeb Raza for a single to reach his hundred and was dismissed in the final overs while attempting to loft left-arm spinner Raza Ali Dar.

The run riot continued as Ravi Kanth Shukla played a sledgehammer innings to take India to a challenging total. Pakistan's pursuit began in right earnest as skipper Nasir Jamshed (76, 59b, 8x4, 3x6) and Yasir Arafat (56) shared a 132-run partnership. Nasir slammed the seamers over and past covers with impunity, sending seamer Atish Jena and left-arm spinner Murtaza into the stands. Nasir, however, failed in his attempt to whip leg-spinner Piyush Chawla (four for 40) and the leading edge was pouched by the bowler in his followthrough.

Soon, the Pakistan innings lost its way as a clutch of batsmen charged against the spinners and were left stranded.

In a clash of the minnows at the IAF Ground, Nepal defeated Bahrain by 89 runs.
