Bijapur
By Our Staff Correspondent
BIJAPUR, JAN. 22. Stage is set for the formal inauguration of the Karnataka Women's University even as questions remain over its jurisdiction and recognition. The Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi, will inaugurate the university. The first semester examinations are over and the results have been delayed in view of the Friday's function. This academic year, the university has been offering postgraduate courses in six subjects English, Kannada, Women's Study, Economics, Sociology, and Education (M.Ed.). The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, sprang a surprise by announcing his decision to start the women's university in Bijapur while presenting the 2003-04 Budget. He had earmarked Rs. five crore for the purpose. Perhaps, this was a measure to set right the regional imbalances. Mr. Krishna, who was keen to see that the university functioned from this academic year, began the process in right earnest.
