PONDICHERRY, JAN. 22. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has said his Government was keen on ameliorating the lot of minorities. Distributing educational assistance, totalling Rs 1.42 lakhs, to 131 boys and 68 girls belonging to the Muslim community under a Pondicherry State Wakf Board scheme here today, Mr. Rangasamy said the assistance was meant to enable the students to pursue their higher secondary and technical education courses. Calling upon students to make use of facilities available to them to hone their skills, the Chief Minister said presently the Union Territory was in third place in literacy in the country. Steps were taken to make Pondicherry as top in this field. In addition to opening schools and colleges and professional institutions, the Administration was extending scholarship to students of poor families. The Wakf Board would be sanctioned a higher grant in future, although presently the Administration was providing Rs. 31 lakhs for its activities. The Chairman of the Wakf Board, M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, presided. Among those who spoke included Annibal Kennedy, MLA, and the board secretary, A. Sherfudeen.
