Economist dead

JAIPUR, JAN. 22. The noted economist and founder chairman of the Jaipur-based Institute of Development Studies (IDS), M.V. Mathur, died in Baltimore in the U.S. on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his daughter, with whom he was staying in Baltimore since 1999.

Born in Alwar in 1915, Prof. Mathur was the Vice-Chancellor of Rajasthan University from 1966 to 1968, Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research from 1974 to 1975, Director of the National Institute of Education Planning and Administration from 1975 to 1980 and worked for several Commissions and committees at the national and international levels.

Prof. Mathur was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1989 in recognition of his contribution to economic research. Prior to that, he received the Parikh Memorial Award in 1983 and the Rajasthan Ratna Award instituted by the Rajasthan Government in 1984.He was the first Chairman of the IDS from 1981 to 1987 and was the member of the Central Government's Fourth Pay Commission, Third Finance Commission, Education Commission and the Plantation Inquiry Commission. He also headed a committee of the Rajasthan Government on reorganisation of universities in the State from 1978 to 1980.

The IDS faculty and fellows condoled Prof. Mathur's death at a meeting organised on the institute campus here today. The Director of IDS, S.S. Acharya, said Prof. Mathur's contribution to the policy formulation in the fields of economics, planning and education over a span of 40 years would always be remembered.
