`Political overtones in Governor's address'

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, JAN. 22 .The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, B.D.Kalla, today criticized the "political overtones'' of the address of the State Governor, Madan Lal Khurana. Participating in the motion of thanks to the address of the Governor on the concluding day of the debate, Dr.Kalla said the address of the Governor should not have sounded like a "political party's document''.

The Governor's had named the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress in his address which was against the traditions. "The Governor can complement the Chief Minister but cannot supplement her as he had said after taking the oath,'' Dr.Kalla asserted. The Governor's address was anti-farmer, anti-labour and anti-poor, he charged.

In his one- hour- long speech, Dr.Kalla, said: "The Centre had been holding up money due to the State all these days. They even discontinued the funds due for the Indira Gandhi Canal for the past three years.''

The Opposition leader, who attacked the policies and programmes of the new Government, alleged unleashing of a `hidden agenda' by it as and when the Lok Sabha elections got over. "After the elections the Government will go for heavy taxation,'' he noted

"The Bharatiya Janata Party had promised in its manifesto to reduce the power rates but after winning the elections what it proposes is a hike in the tariff,'' he observed.

Dr.Kalla attacked the Centre for step-motherly treatment meted out to the State and defended the policies of the previous Government in which he too was a Minister. If the State was now getting more money from the Centre it was due to the good work done by the previous Government in sectors like power reforms and road development. Even tourist influx this season was the result of the beautification of urban centres by the Congress Government and attempts made by it in the past to promote tourism, he claimed.
