YSR accused of misleading people

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 22. Taking exception to the former CLP leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's criticism of the Government on women empowerment, the Telugu Desam Party said that the Congress, which never took up women's empowerment programmes in the states ruled by it, had no moral right to criticise the TDP.

It was during the past eight years of the TDP rule that Rs. 700 crores were provided to more than 65 lakh women in 4.73 lakh DWCRA groups while efforts were under way to provide them cell phones to enable them have a better understanding of the market with effective communication. In addition, several programmes were initiated for providing livelihood to 31 lakh families as part of the Velugu programme with an estimated Rs. 2,079 crore.

While these were the facts, the former CLP leader was trying to mislead the people, women in particular, for political gains, the TDP district unit spokesmen, T. Premnath and S.K Baig said in a statement.

Women, who were aware of the programmes launched for their empowerment, would not believe the Congress campaign against the ruling party and were prepared to teach a fitting lesson to the opposition party in the forthcoming elections, they said.
