Vijayawada

VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 22. Members of two rival groups in the Congress jostled with each other and almost came to blows in a show of strength in the presence of the coastal Andhra observer, Narayanaswami, incurring his wrath at the State guest here on Thursday evening. Followers of the city unit president, Kadiyala Butchibabu, and the PCC secretary, Malladi Vishnu, in a bid to prevent each other from getting close to the election observer, blocked his way for over 15 minutes. Mr Narayanaswami, who could not get out of the car, shouted at the activists to make them give way to him. The jostling accompanied by yelling increased in intensity after Mr Narayanaswami alighted from the vehicle. Followers of Mr Butchibabu, caught hold of the PCC secretary by the shirt and pulled him away from the observer. Mr Narayanaswami then called Mr Butchibabu into his room and gave him a loud warning that was heard even by those who were outside the guest house building. Addressing newspersons, he said he was exhausted and needed rest and he would get a grip of the situation here in the morning.
