Weaker sections plan meet on January 25

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 22. A large number of people belonging to Backward Classes (BCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) and minority communities would be gathering in the city on January 25 to demand adequate representation while allotting Assembly seats in the coming Assembly elections, said Dadi Apparao, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Standing Committee Chairman.

Mr. Apparao accused the political machinery in the State of doing grave injustice to BCs, SCs and STs and minorities in every sphere of life.

He alleged in a statement that political parties had been exploiting these people and using them at the time of elections for votes by making lot of promises that were not being kept later.

Of the 294 Assembly constituencies, about 164 should be allotted for the weaker sections, but in the 1999 elections, only 54 seats were allotted for them, he pointed out.

According to him, only 11 of the 96 BCs got representation in the elections and the remaining were ignored.

He said an agitation would be launched in Krishna district and certainly BCs hold the key in constituencies like Avanigadda, Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Malleswaram, Kaikaluru and Vijayawada West, he said.
