Violence in Kasaragod

KASARAGOD, JAN. 23. Tension prevailed in Ariyal, near here, following clashes between members of two communities late Thursday night. Trouble broke out when some a group of people attacked a ceremonial procession that taken out from the Durga Parameswari Temple at Ariyal. According to sources, the bursting of crackers near a mosque had been the provocation for the attack.

Miscreants set on fire as many as seven vehicles and four shops in the area following the clashes. The miscreants also ransacked a few houses in the nearby area. The police had to resort to a lathicharge to disburse the crowd that gathered in the violence-hit area. E. Raghavan, Additional SI, who sustained serious injury in his eyes in an attack, has been admitted to a hospital in Mangalore. About 90 persons had been taken into custody to avert fresh incidents.

Senior police officers including the DIG (Northern Range), Nithin Agarwal, were camping in the area.

Hartal today: Meanwhile, condemning the incident, the VHP, BJP and BMS have called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the district tomorrow.
