Restructure Income Tax Department: MP

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, JAN. 23. Sebastian Paul, MP, has said that a change in the structure of the Income Tax Department should be considered to meet the challenges of a new working regime in the Government.

Inaugurating the fifth State conference of Income Tax Employees' Federation (ITEF), Kerala circle, Dr. Paul said that privatisation and globalisation had shifted the Government's focus.

The Government's gradual withdrawal from the service sector had resulted in the private sector stepping in to build infrastructure and offer other services, said Dr. Paul. However, the common man ends up with "double taxation", by paying income tax to Governments as well as to private institutions for their `public services'.

At the conference, V. Venugopal, Director General of Income Tax (Investigation Kerala) and L. Kuriakose, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Thiruvananthapuram, and others spoke.

Mr. Kuriakose pointed out the need for bringing in a total change in work culture.

The revenue from income tax revenue till December 2003 was Rs. 1,100 crores against a target of Rs. 1,650 crores for the financial year, he added.
