Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 23. The Visakha Society For Prevention of Cruelty for Animals and Blue Cross Animal and Environmental Welfare Society announced on Friday that they would approach court against the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon of the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, Karunakaran, for allegedly manhandling their representatives while trying to photograph catching of `normal' dogs. The representatives -- Swathi Buddhiraju and G.E. Pratap Singh -- told reporters at a press conference here that they were physically assaulted on December 27 last at about 7 p.m. when they tried to photograph the VMC officials taking away three `operated' dogs. Also, an attempt was made to snatch their camera. Asked if they had lodged any complaint with the police, they said they did not intend to lodge a complaint as they wanted to settle the issue amicably with the VMC through a dialogue with the Municipal Commissioner. They alleged that though they had given a written complaint to Mr. Navin Mittal, he had not taken any action. They were, however, unable to answer questions from the mediapersons as to why they did not approach the Municipal Commissioner or the police during the past three weeks to resolve the issue. They sought an enquiry into the incident by the Municipal Commissioner and cooperation from the VMC in implementing the Animal Birth Control Programme. There were some differences between the VSPCA and the VMC regarding the implementation of the ABC programme, which remain unresolved.
