Sea change in Nationals on the horizon

By Kirti Patil

GWALIOR, JAN. 24. The National billiards and snooker championships may well see its last in the present form here in Gwalior. The Nationals cues off at the Jiwaji University complex here on Sunday, and after 70 years since it was launched the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) has accepted the fact that the championship has grown into an enormous exercise.

Six main championships and four qualifying tournaments are rolled into one to make a schedule that lasts about a month. And, over the years, such an extravagance has become unmanageable. Consequently, the BSFI, at its Managing Committee meeting here on Saturday, put on hold the awarding of the 2005 National championship. In fact, there were no takers for the next Nationals.

There will be 134 junior and senior players competing just in the qualifying tournaments that run along with the main events. There will be just four qualifiers each in billiards and snooker, in the junior and senior sections respectively. In all, 339 cueists are expected to participate with 514 matches scheduled till February 18.

Another first has been introduced by the BSFI. The Managing Committee has ratified a point system for the billiards and snooker players. Up till now the rankings achieved at the Nationals were considered to select the Indian team for the international events. Though the players are still unsure how it would work, and specifically, how it will affect their prospect, the step seems to be in the right direction. The champion gets 4000 points, runner-up 3560 and points gets awarded till the eighth place. The BSFI has put forth points table even for the Asian and World qualifiers with total points earned by a particular player considered while selecting the team.
