Cuddalore
By Our Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE, JAN. 24. The Labour Progressive Front (LPF), lone recognised union in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), has protested the State Government's move to sink 45 giant size deep borewells in Neyveli region for sourcing water for Chennai. The general secretary, S. Raja Vanniyan, told The Hindu that the union was not against tapping permanent sources, but the Government was taking only ad hoc measures. The proposed borewells would be dug between Paravanar and Palar, falling within the Cuddalore district. Already, the groundwater level in 15 km radius in the region was fast depleting, thanks to the mining operation of the NLC. Mr. Vanniyan pointed out that the Centre had directed the NLC management not to sink any more borewells. The Tamil Nadu Government had also passed orders banning fresh ones. So the proposal to dig borewells would only mean that the "Government is violating its own orders." At present, farmers in and around Neyveli were getting inadequate supply for irrigation. Therefore, the Government must give up the New Veeranam project and the proposal to dig borewells.
