Blend science with spirituality: former CBI director

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, JAN. 24. India is endowed with the second largest reservoir of technical manpower in the world that has enabled it to make a mark in technology and computer. However, the country is yet to regain its past glory, and this could be possible only by blending science with spirituality, according to D.R. Karthikeyan, former director, Central Bureau of Investigation.

Mr. Karthikeyan was addressing a seminar on "Introspection and self-assessment for human resource development," jointly organised by the Yoga Educational Centre and the Arignar Kuzhu (of which he is the president), on Annamalai University premises at Chidambaram here today.

He noted that Vedhathri Maharishi had advocated leading life in tune with nature. Owing to indiscriminate felling of trees, rain had failed, creating water scarcity.

Human civilisation and cultural development revolved around water sources. Villagers in search of water were migrating to urban areas, resulting in proliferation of slums. Some pockets in Tamil Nadu were facing acute water scarcity. If one were to leave the Earth a better place for posterity, it had become imperative for one to plant one sapling. There were 40 crore adults in the country, and if all of them did so, the forest cover would expand significantly.

Mr Karthikeyan maintained that the advancement in science and technology had brought comforts to humanity, and yet their potential to endanger mankind was quite menacing.

He hoped that by inculcating spirituality, peace would be ensured.

Mr Karthikeyan said Vethathri Maharishi expounded it in simple language that could be easily understood by the people. The Maharishi stated that thoughts had the potential to make a man a king or a pauper, and therefore, if the genesis of thought were purified, peace would prevail all over.

The president of the World Community Service Forum, S.K.M. Maielanandan, said by combining `Para vidya' (learning about Supreme being) and `Apara vidya' (knowledge about all other disciplines) a perfect harmony could be achieved. The educational institutions ought to make life-oriented sciences compulsory in the curricula.
