Annamalai University to start diploma courses in yoga

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, JAN. 24. The Annamalai University will start diploma courses in yoga through distance education from the next academic year, according to L.B. Venkatrangan, Vice-Chancellor.

Addressing a seminar on "human resource development through self-assessment" on the university premises here today, Mr. Venkatrangan said the university would organise "compulsive and vigorous training" to students for 40 days in two spells of 20 days each.

When M.Sc courses in physics and chemistry, which required elaborate laboratory practices, were offered through the distance education, why could not the university offer yoga courses through this mode, he asked.

The Centre for Yoga Studies of the university had so far trained 12,000 students in yoga and meditation.

He said the university had been urging the Government to declare Tamil a classical language. It had written to the Government in 1996 itself, urging it to confer the classical status on the language. In the recently held syndicate meeting too, a resolution was passed in this regard.

The former Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, D.R. Karthikeyan, appreciated the good work done by the yoga centre. The ambience and the vibration prevailing in the centre was such that it would make even a novice to sit for a while in meditation.

Mr Karthikeyan lauded the centre's director, S. Viswanathan, for having done his best to spread the concept of yoga and meditation among students.
