Tight security in Jammu

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU, JAN. 24. An unprecedented security blanket has been thrown over Jammu city, particularly around the Maulana Azad Stadium where the main Republic Day celebrations are to be held. Security personnel today took position atop high-rise buildings near the venue. Bullet-proof bunkers have been installed and movement inside the premises restricted.

In 1995, much to the embarrassment of the security apparatus, militants exploded a bomb metres from the then Governor, K.V. Krishna Rao, when he was delivering his Republic Day address. Intelligence agencies have warned of the possibility of "fidayeen" strikes. In Poonch district, police killed two "fidayeen" belonging to the Abu Hashma group of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, planning to carry out an attack on a vital installation in Surankote town.
