CHENNAI, JAN. 24. Erode defeated Madurai and qualified for the semifinals of the S.S. Rajan Trophy inter-district cricket tournament at the Hindu College-A ground on Saturday. Vellore and Salem also qualified for the last-four stage. The scores: Madurai 218 for eight in 50 overs (R. Arjun 92, D. Jai Shankar 46, Sushail Kumar Verma four for 50) lost to Erode 219 for four in 44.5 overs (C. Thanga Raj 71, Jaffer Asique Ali 73 not out, John Sherapin 32). At Dindigul: Vellore 175 in 48.5 overs (S. Manivannan 44, E. Suresh 28, Varun Kumar 36) bt Kancheepuram 165 in 42.3 overs (Raveendra Babu 60, G. Umapathy 36, Ganapathy three for 28). At Karaikudi: Dharmapuri 96 in 32.3 overs (Sridhar 34, Gokulakrishna 26, Vasanthakumar four for 37) lost to Salem 99 for three in 22.3 overs (Thangadurai 61). At Coimbatore: Namakkal 83 in 30.1 overs (Saravanan seven for 30) lost to Coimbatore 85 for one in 25 overs (R. Tharun 37 not out, S. Vikram Senthil 29 not out). Kanyakumari 182 in 48.5 overs (Sahaya Vijay 30) lost to Thiruvarur 186 for seven in 48.3 overs (Sathish Kumar 58, Jespal 27 not out, Velmurugan 26, Mariya Leonard Antony four for 26).
