U.P. Minister quits
By Our Special Correspondent
LUCKNOW,
JAN. 24.
The Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Science and Technology, Choudhury Basheer, resigned today in protest against what he described as the "anti-Muslim policies" of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government.
Mr. Basheer handed over his resignation to the Governor, Vishnu Kant Shastri, and sent a copy to the Chief Minister. He told newspersons later that a section in the Samajwadi Party was pursuing anti-minority policies in a deliberate manner.
Mr. Basheer said he thought it was his duty to protect the interests of his community and that there was no point continuing in office if he was unable to do that. He had been trying to meet the Chief Minister to convey his feelings. However, he was not successful.
