THANJAVUR, JAN. 24. The Government has chalked out an alternative crop plan for the Cauvery delta districts this summer, said R.Navaneetha Krishnan, Joint Director of Agriculture, Thanjavur district at Kumbakonam yesterday. He was speaking at a farmers' day meeting at Sakkottai near Kumbakonam. As water was scarce, alternative crop plan was the only answer. Steps would be taken to introduce in Thanjavur district contract cotton farming, which was in vogue in Nagapattinam district. Pulses, sunflower and maize could be raised as alternative crops. A change of food habits was necessary. Rice from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh was flooding the market. Paddy alone could not be a remunerative crop in future, he said. S.Kosalaraman, District Collector, said delta farmers must adapt themselves to new forms of cultivation. With a view to taking information to villages, internet dabhas would be opened in each village in the district. They would be opened in 140 villages out of 589 village panchayats. The ELCOT would give training to women self-help group members in operating the centres. The Collector released a booklet in Tamil on soil resource database for perspective land use planning in the Papanasam Panchayat union prepared by V.Ramkumar, assistant agriculture chemist, S.Loganathana, and V.S.Rangan, agriculture officer. The Collector presented a memento to Reeta, who has won an international award at the World Women Summit, Geneva.
