CHENNAI, JAN. 24. The Tamil Nadu Government has extended for a further three months the prohibition of strikes in certain essential services, public services and posts under the Essential Services Maintenance Act. According to an order issued on Thursday, the period of operation of the prohibition of strikes would extend from January 23 as the Government was satisfied that this was ``in the public interest and in the interest of the public order.'' On October 23 last, the Government extended till January 23, 2004, the prohibition of strikes in 27 departments (which have been termed essential services). An annexure to the Government Order 1279 dated October 23, 2003 listed them: water supply, electricity, transport services for carriage of passengers or goods by motor vehicles and workshop for maintenance of or repairs to the vehicles, public health and sanitation including hospitals, dispensaries and public conservancy, Municipal Corporations and local authorities, fire brigade, Animal Husbandry and Milk, Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Marketing, Cooperation, Civil Supplies and the public distribution system, the Public Works department including Irrigation, Highways, Factories, Rural Development, Commercial Taxes, Revenue, Information and Public Relations, Registration, Treasuries and Accounts, Stationery and Printing, noon-meal programme, Social Welfare, School Education and Higher Education departments, besides the ministerial service of the Police department.
