BANGALORE, JAN. 24. The Editor of Deccan Herald, K.N. Shanth Kumar, was honoured here on Saturday by Rotary District 3190 at its district conference for his services in encouraging voluntary organisations. Replying to the felicitation, Mr Shanth Kumar said the newspaper was only rendering a public service and thanked the Rotary. Devi Prasad Shetty of Narayana Hrudayalaya was honoured for "building bridges of friendship with other countries, especially Pakistan" by treating a number of children from that country who needed critical heart surgery. Dr. Shetty said a hospital and training centre was being set up in Tanzania, a country badly in need of doctors and trained nurses. Two doctors from that country had already undergone training at Narayana Hrudayalaya. "Our hospital is now offering heart surgery and treatment at a highly subsidised rate to people of Indian origin from Malaysia, many of whom are poor workers. The Yeshaswini scheme for heart patients has already covered 26,000 farmers and farm workers, and 6,000 surgeries have been carried out with the patients paying just Rs. 5 each," Dr. Shetty said. The Rotary also honoured Madhu Pandit Das of ISKCON for providing nutritious midday meals to more than 50,000 children in government and municipal schools through the Akshya Patra project. Harmeet Bawa, Vice-President, ABB India, was also honoured.
