More young people getting heart attacks: Study

BANGALORE, JAN. 23. There is an increase in the incidence of heart attacks among young people, according to a study conducted by the Wockhardt Heart Institute here.

Ranganath Nayak, interventional cardiologist at the hospital, told presspersons here on Friday that an analysis of cardiac patients conducted by the institute showed that more people in the age group of 45 to 55 were getting heart attacks. The study assessed 1,624 patients in three years.

In 2003, 656 people who suffered heart attacks were relatively younger. The risk factors for heart disease among these patients were observed to be diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and smoking, he said.

The study highlighted the need for managing these modifiable risk factors, Vishal Bali, vice-president of the institute, said.

The institute also conducted a study on the new advancement of patients undergoing angioplasty procedure with drug-eluting stent.

As many as 301 patients who had undergone the procedure were examined, and it was revealed that less than one percent of them had recurrence of the block, Dr. Nayak said.
