Goods train parts midway, trains delayed

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JAN.25. A goods train parted midway between Tirumangalam and Tirpparankundram railway stations in Madurai Division today.

Several trains suffered detention following the freak mishap and a departmental enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

According to railway sources, more than 25 coal-laden wagons detached midway leaving part of the train behind this morning. Even as the driver realised the mishap and brought the train to a halt immediately, the separated half was left far behind.

The goods train was carrying coal to the Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals Limited.

While the front portion of the goods train was taken to Tirumangalam, the engine of the Chennai-Nagercoil special train, which arrived Tirupparankundram at around 9.50 a.m., was used to haul back the parted half.

The special train left for Nagercoil after a two-hour detention. The Nagercoil-Tirupati Express, the Guruvayur-Chennai Egmore Express and the Nagercoil-Coimbatore passenger trains arrived late by more than two hours, the sources added.

"We suspect that the coupling between two wagons might have broken leading to the separation of the train midsection," a top railway official said, adding that a probe was on into the incident.
