AP boys, Kerala girls cruise into quarterfinals

KOLKATA, JAN. 25. Defending boys' champion Andhra Pradesh won all its matches, without conceding a game, in the preliminary league to top Group A and waltz into the quarterfinals of the 30th National junior volleyball at Baidyabati on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu and Chandigarh, with similar all-win records, topped Groups B and C. Last year's runner-up Karnataka also made it to the quarterfinals as Group B runner-up. Uttar Pradesh and Punjab ensured a quarterfinal berth from Group D.

In the girls' section, defending champion Kerala sailed into the knock-out phase, winning all its Group A league matches. Last year's runner-up Karnataka was shocked by host Bengal, which took the leading position in Group B with an all-win record. Karnataka too made it to the last-eight stage as the runner-up. Tamil Nadu also ensured its quarterfinal entry from Group D after winning all the five matches it played.

Boys: Group A: Kerala bt M.P. 3-1; A.P. bt Mizoram 3-0; Bengal bt Delhi 3-1; Mizoram bt M.P. 3-1; Kerala bt Delhi 3-0; A.P. bt Bengal 3-0.

Group B: Chandigarh bt Assam 3-0; H.P. bt Chhattisgarh 3-0; Orissa bt Goa 3-0; Karnataka bt H.P. 3-0; Assam bt Goa 3-1; Orissa bt Chhattisgarh 3-0; Orissa bt H.P. 3-0; Chandigarh bt Chhattisgarh 3-0; Karnataka bt Assam 3-0.

Group C: Manipur bt J&K 3-2; Tamil Nadu bt Gujarat 3-0; Haryana bt Jharkhand 3-0; J&K bt Jharkhand 3-1; T.N. bt Manipur 3-0.

Group D: Rajasthan bt Bihar 3-0; U.P. bt Pondicherry 3-0; Maharashtra bt Tripura 3-1; Maharashtra bt Bihar 3-1; Punjab bt Tripura 3-0, U.P. bt Rajasthan 3-0.

Girls: Group A: Chandigarh bt Manipur 3-0; Kerala bt J&k 3-0; Chandigarh w/o Goa; Manipur bt J&K 3-0; Kerala bt Delhi 3-0.

Group B: Bengal bt Tripura 3-0; Karnataka bt Rajasthan 3-0; Bihar bt Gujarat 3-0; Tripura bt Gujarat 3-0; Rajasthan bt Bihar 3-0; Bengal bt Karnataka 3-2.

Group C: Pondicherry bt Assam 3-0; Orissa bt M.P. 3-0; Maharashtra bt A.P. 3-2; A.P. bt M.P. 3-0; Maharashtra bt Assam 3-0.
