GULBARGA, JAN. 25. The entry of the two-time Lok Sabha member, B.G. Jawali, into the BJP is likely to strengthen the party in Gulbarga district, where it had lost ground in the past few years. Though his decision has not come as a shock to Congress leaders in the district, it may have an impact on the party. Dr. Jawali, son-in-law of the former Chief Minister Veerendra Patil, is the president of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Education Society, which runs a chain of educational institutions, including medical, dental, and engineering colleges in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. The downfall of Dr. Jawali began with his defeat in 1996 Lok Sabha polls. In the 1999 elections, the Congress rejected his application for ticket from the Gulbarga parliamentary constituency and chose the then DCC President, Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi. Sources in the Congress told The Hindu that the resignation of Dr Jawali had not caused any surprise as there was talk about his resignation for some time. Dr. Jawali had also sought the party ticket in the recently held biennial elections to the Legislative Council from the local authorities constituency in Gulbarga district, the sources said.
