THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 25. The founder of the Free Software Movement, Richard M. Stallman, and the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, have called upon progressive sections to defend the freedom in computing. In a joint statement here today, Mr. Stallman and Mr. Achuthanandan said the movement faced challenges from various groups, including multinational corporations such as Microsoft, which were interested in taking away the users' freedom. "They use various tactics, such as misinformation, anti-free software legislation, and buying support of possible nuclei of opposition. To resist them, more and more people must make efforts to defend our freedom. People's action is essential. Empowered with free software, let us defend our freedom in computing," they said. Mr. Stallman and Mr. Achuthanandan pointed out that several Governments in Latin America had decided to go in for free software for their IT infrastructure as they saw it as a way of defending and proclaiming the political freedom of their nations.
