NEW DELHI, JAN. 25. The former Chief Justice of India, M.N. Venkatachaliah, litterateur Amrita Pritam and astronomer Jayant Vishnu Narlikar have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award.



Padma Bhushan: Soumitra Chatterjee

No one was selected this year for the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna.



Padma Bhushan: Gulzar

Nineteen persons, including film personalities, artistes and a distinguished foreigner, have been selected for Padma Bhushan. They include dancer Alarmel Valli, Krishna Srinivas for literature and education, the Bengali film director and actor Soumitra Chatterjee, the Hindi film director and lyricist Gulzar, journalist M.V. Kamath, the former Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshiro Mori, the head of the Army's Health Corps, B.N. Shahi, litterateur Ch. Hanumantha Rao from Andhra Pradesh, the Carnatic vocalist, Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan, violinist N. Rajam and social worker Poornima Arvind Pakvasa from Gujarat.

C. S. Dharmadhikari (public affairs), literary personalities Gopi Chand Narang and Vishnu Prabhakar, musician Komal Kothari, scientists Govindarajan Padmanabhan and Sardara Singh Johl and civil servants T.L. Sankar and T.V. Antony have also been awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Seventyfour Padma Shri awards have been announced. The recipients include the captain of the Indian cricket team and his deputy, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, singer Hariharan, instrumental musician A.K. Palanivel, film director Bharathiraja, Kathakali exponent K.R. Kumaran Nair, athletes K.M. Beenamol and Anju Bobby George, P. Parameswaran, Samuel Paul, S.S. Mohd Hussaini, and K. Ayyappa Paniker for literature and education, biophysicist Mamannamana Vijayan, siblings N. Leela and V. Kunjumani (flautists), Carnatic vocalists Sudha Raghunathan and Neyyattinkara Vasudevan, scientists N.R. Mohanty, Visheshwaraiah Prakash and Nampally Divakar, actor Anupam Kher, hockey player Dilip Tirkey, Mohiniattam expert Bharati Shivaji, kuchipudi exponent Guru Jayaram Rao, Gowri Ishwaran (literature and education), medicos A.T. Dabke and Ashwin Mehta, educationist Asifa Zamani and social worker B.L. Srinivasa Murthy.



Padma Shri: Rahul Dravid

Four foreigners have also been honoured with Padma Shri awards. They are Aubakir Nilibayev (Kazakhstan), Flora Macdonald (Canada), Heinrich Freiherr Von Stietencron (Germany) and Tatyana Elizarenkova (Russia).
