MYSORE, JAN. 25. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) will launch a pilot mid-day meal programme in government schools in Mysore by June 2004. The mid-day meal project will be part of the activities to be launched by the ISKCON Mysore centre. Work on the project is expected to commence soon. ISKCON held the land consecration ceremony at its new site on Sunday. The Revenue Minister, H.C. Srikantaiah, unveiled the dedication stone for the project. The Mysore centre has drawn up plans to construct a major spiritual and cultural centre, the Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre, on the lines of ISKCON Temple in Bangalore. The proposed project in Mysore includes the construction of a temple of Sri Radha Krishna, an international guesthouse, provision of mid-day meal schemes for schoolchildren and establishing a state-of-the-art multimedia theatre for providing a unique perspective of the philosophy of Bhagavatha. The Government has provided nine acres of land to ISKCON for the new centre. The project also includes the construction of a prayer hall and an akshaya patra kitchen within the next few months. According to ISKCON authorities, it has taken up food relief programme in many parts of the world. The ISKCON movement today comprises more than 300 temples, 50 rural communities in 95 countries and varied social welfare activities. The Bangalore centre is providing hot meals to more than 53,000 schoolchildren in government schools under the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal programme, they have said.
