`Sonia resorting to melodrama'

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 25. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, today criticised the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, for unnecessarily blaming the Centre for the Congress-led Delhi Government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi's weaknesses and resorting to "melodrama'' during her visit to the JJ camps at Holambi Kalan and Narela yesterday.

Addressing five meetings in different parts of the Capital in connection with the Atal Sandesh Yatra, Prof. Malhotra said since the shifting of jhuggis (shanties) and their resettlement is done by the MCD, which is dominated by Congress, if there was any lack of facilities, then the Congress Government of Delhi and the MCD were to be blamed as they were supposed to provide basic amenities like water, electricity, sewer and roads along with schools and transport facilities.

As such, the BJP leader charged that Ms Gandhi's criticism for lack of these facilities was in fact a slap on the face of the Sheila Dikshit Government and the officials of the MCD. Noting that MCD had undertaken the shifting and resettlement of jhuggis as per the order of the Delhi High Court, he said it was "mischievous and unethical'' on part of the Congress president to criticise the Central Government for her own party's faults.

At rallies in Tilak Nagar and Garhi in South Delhi, he exhorted the youth to come forward and implement the Prime Minister's call for "One Booth - Ten Youth'' to ensure Atal Bihari Vajpayee's re-election to the post.

Noting that India has emerged as a prosperous and strong nation, he said the financial condition is good, and the Kisan Credit Card and soft loans to farmers and artisans have improved the condition of the poor. Further, with the relationship with Pakistan improving, Central leaders having talks with the Hurriyat Conference and terrorism being reined in, Prof. Malhotra said people are in favour of voting the BJP back to power as they want to see Mr Vajpayee as Prime Minister.
