NEW DELHI, JAN. 25. The Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar, today laid foundation stones for two major developmental projects that would further strengthen the railway infrastructure in the Capital falling under Northern Railway. The Minister laid the foundation stone for a new railway station-building project worth Rs.15.47 crore at Ajmeri gate side of the New Delhi railway station. Similarly, he also formally gave the go-ahead for the construction of an alternative passenger terminal at Anand Vihar in East Delhi on which Rs.85 crores would be spent. The upgradation of Ajmeri Gate side of New Delhi railway station will help ease passenger movement and flow besides providing more comfort to passengers. The new two-storey building would have 6000 square metres of covered area where ticket booking hall, waiting hall with facilities for handicapped passengers, cloak rooms, food plaza, book stalls and VIP lounge with ATM and foreign exchange counters would be set up. The alternative terminal at Anand Vihar, to be built in an area of 42 hectares, is aimed at decongesting rail traffic in Delhi area. The construction work would be carried out in a phased manner where the main station building would be built in the first phase. Connectivity would be provided with the existing inter-state bus terminal at Anand Vihar and the EMU platforms of the station. Two independent railway lines would also be built from Sahibabad separately. Speaking on the occasion, the Railway Minister said the first phase of work on the Anand Vihar terminal would be completed within two years. He also announced that the New Delhi-Bareilly Intercity Express would have an additional halt at Anand Vihar station. Senior Railway officials including the Railway Board Chairman, RK Singh, were also present on the occasion.
