RAICHUR, JAN. 25. Hailstorm accompanied by gusty winds damaged standing crops in 22 villages of Raichur taluk on Saturday. The district administration has estimated the loss at Rs. five crore. Many trees were uprooted along the road from Raichur to Gangavathi, Hubli, Belgaum, Bijapur, and Hospet, affecting traffic till Sunday afternoon. The authorities concerned had to struggle for hours to clear the road of uprooted trees for traffic. Hailstorm occurred when farmers were preparing to harvest the standing crops. Paddy, jowar, horse gram, and sunflower grown in 5,000 acres of land in the taluk were destroyed in hailstorm. Sunflower and horse gram crops were the worst affected at Sriramnagar Camp, Siddanbhavi Camp, Kasbe Camp, and Venkateshwara Camp in the taluk. Reports received here said the hailstorm also destroyed standing crops at Yermarus. Farmers were expecting a bumper crop with good rainfall during the sowing season. Meanwhile, a team of leaders from the district unit of the Janata Dal (S) led by the former Minister, M.S.Patil, visited the affected villages today.
