WARANGAL, JAN. 25. Scores of trees were uprooted and vehicular traffic came to a standstill as sudden gale and heavy rain lashed the district on Sunday. Power supply was snapped for many hours in the district headquarters. The gale followed by heavy rain uprooted many trees on the Mulug road resulting in a traffic jam for more than three hours in the evening. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the busy road forcing people to cover the 15-kilometre stretch from Urugonda to Arepalli on foot. The Warangal District Collector, N. Siva Sankar, and other senior officials returning from Medaram, where they had gone to oversee arrangements for the Sammakka-Sarakka jatara, were also caught up in the mess. The Collector reportedly contacted the district headquarters and directed the police and Roads and Buildings officials to rush to the spot with poclains to remove the trees. The police attached to the Atmakur mandal headquarters swung into action to clear the trees and regulate traffic. Meanwhile, at the district headquarters power supply was affected in many areas. According to information reaching here, the sudden gale and showers affected the standing cotton and chilly crop in many mandals across the district. However, the extent of damage was yet to be ascertained.
