Irrational, unfair

Sir, — The shoddy work done while filling up trenches dug for sewage connection has made roads at Nanganallur fit for conducting a motocross.

The financing of the sewage scheme itself is strange. After collecting Rs. 6,000 from each flat owner, the Alandur Municipality is now demanding an additional Rs. 1,000 a flat under threat of disconnection (for connections already made) for non-payment.

It defies logic and fairness why each flat owner (in a block of flats) is asked to shell out Rs. 7,000 for a single connection given to the block (for a block of 20 flats the amount demanded adds up to Rs. 1.4 lakhs for a single connection).

Neglected waterway

Sir, — There is a stinking waterway covered with thick, wild vegetation that is a source of breeding, not only for mosquitoes but also for bandicoots and reptiles at Ayanavaram. The huge canal also serves as a dumping ground for solid wastes and other unwanted things, including carcass. The four-kilometre waterway, known as `Ainsley Canal', comes under railway premises. It is also a receptacle with sewer lines of residential and commercial establishments all along its course connected to it (Corporation wards 63, 55, 57, 53 and 58) between Villivakkam and Otteri.

Fee exorbitant

Sir, — This has reference to the news report on underground drainage project of the Alandur Municipality (The Hindu, Jan. 19).

The decision of the municipality to claim payment of Rs. 150 towards maintenance fee from each flat owner is unreasonable when a similar fee collected in Chennai, a comparatively much developed area, is much lower. The infrastructure available now at Nanganallur is poor.

Appeal for new services

Sir, — About 3,000-4,000 office-goers, students, workers and other sections of people belonging to Adambakkam, Alandur, Vanuvampettai, Madipakkam, Keezhkattalai, Kovilampakkam, Nanmangalam and Medavakkam that come under the St. Thomas Mount area rely on buses to go to Triplicane, Mylapore, T.Nagar, Porur, Koyambedu and Egmore. As these people belong to lower and middle classes they cannot afford any other expensive mode of transport. Now only one or two buses ply towards Koyambedu and Egmore.

The people of this area were hoping that new services will be introduced after the commissioning of the St. Thomas Mount railway subway, connecting G.S.T. Road/ St. Thomas Mount to the southern parts up to East Tambaram.

The sooner the hope materialises, the better.

Ill-equipped library

Sir, — There is a small library at Tirukazhukundram, a pilgrim town, in Kancheepuram district.

The town is surrounded by 20 villages. As most of the residents are literate, a public library is essential here.

The library, which already exists, is of no use to students and English readers.

One has to go to Chengalpattu, which is almost 17 km away from the town, to read a book he/she wants.

If something is done to improve the library the residents will be thankful.

An alternative

Sir, — In view of the administrative constraints expressed by the Southern Railway in introducing services from Tambaram and Tirumayilai to Gummidipundi, we request officials to arrange for providing at least electrical multiple unit (EMU) services from Chennai Beach to Ennore in the morning (around 6-45 a.m.) and in the evening by around 4-15 p.m. from the reverse direction.

This will help about 500 commuters using train services in this sector, going to their factories in the early shift hours from all directions of Chennai south and Chengalpattu to the northern parts of Chennai.

V. Ramanujam,

representative of commuters,

North Chennai
