Voters' list to be made flawless

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Jan. 25. The voters' list for the general elections to the local bodies, scheduled to be conducted next year, will be made flawless by undertaking an enumeration of the voters in each ward, the State Election Commissioner, N. Mohandas, has said. In a press release issued here today, he said there were complaints about the voters' list prepared before the previous elections to the local bodies. This would not happen the next time. Enumerators would be deployed to visit all houses and revise the voters' list by deleting the names of those who were dead or had moved away. Also, the names of all people who were eligible to exercise their franchise as on January 1, 2004 would be included in the list. Officials and representatives of political parties would be given the training required to undertake this exercise, he added.

Plantation workers' demand

Plantation workers, under the banner of a joint action council of all major trade unions like INTUC, CITU, AITUC, BMS, UTUC and HMS, propose to hold a dharna before the State Secretariat on January 28 to invite the Government's attention to their problems. In a press release, the CITU-affiliated Kerala Plantation Labour Federation sought the Government's intervention for lifting the freeze on payment of dearness allowance to the plantation workers and revising their wages. The action council also wants the Government to persuade the plantation companies that have closed down their operations to resume their activities. Another demand is to launch a welfare fund for the workers employed in minor plantation companies.

Teachers' forum plea

The Kerala Aided Higher Secondary Teachers' Association has urged the Government to create new posts of Principals in the aided higher secondary schools in the State so that the administrative problems currently being experienced in these schools could be sorted out. In a resolution adopted at its State convention, the association said administration was in total disarray in nearly 1,000 aided higher secondary schools because of the absence of the Principal's posts. The association also said that the Government had `betrayed' the higher secondary teachers by not making any provision in the Budget for the payment of their salary arrears.

Service tax liability

The Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs, Thiruvananthapuram, R.K. Jain, has urged all service providers in the district to have their names registered with the department and settle their service tax liability at the earliest. In a press release, he said the Kerala Zone of the Central Excise and Customs had been given a target of collecting Rs.105.14 crores towards service tax during the current financial year, against Rs.38 crores last financial year. The department had already started door-to-door survey for registration of service providers. Mr. Jain said the department had set up a special task force to liquidate arrears of revenue pending with factories, importers, service providers and passengers, who had defaulted in payment of customs, central excise and service tax. "Where persuasion does not result in recovery of arrears, attachment of properties have been permitted by the Government," he said.

Computerised reservation

A computerised passenger reservation centre started functioning at the Cherthala railway station today. The Alappuzha MP, V.M. Sudheeran, at a function in Cherthala, formally inaugurated the facility, which connects this railway station with the computerised reservation link of entire Indian Railways. In a press release issued here, the Southern Railway said the facility would function between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 2-30 p.m. and 5-0 p.m. on all days except Sundays. On Sundays, the timing is between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

CPI(M) campaign

The State CPI(M) is launching a 10-day campaign beginning February 1 against the growth of communalism and the `anti-people' policies of the Central and State Governments. The CPI(M) State secretariat said in a statement here today that the campaign would highlight five slogans related to the economy and society and would take the agitational programmes of the party to a new level. The question of communalism called for maximum solidarity among the people and the campaign would attempt to rally as many people as possible against the communal forces. The economic policies of the Central and State Government were wreaking havoc with the lives of the people and these would also figure prominently in the campaign, the statement said. The campaign, being held as part of a nation-wide programme, would begin with marches at the area committee level beginning February 1 and culminate in siege of taluk offices and district collectorates on February 10.

SP to cooperate with LDF

KOCHI JAN.25. The Samajwadi Party (SP) has decided to cooperate with the LDF in the State. The State executive committee meeting held here today expressed the view that the party would not be able to cooperate with the BJP in any way. The party's State president, P.M. Harris, said the Congress party, which takes the lead in forming a secular front, should have avoided an alliance with Mayawati's BSP, according to a press release. The State committee office-bearers, G. Krishnankutty Nair, A. Abdulkhadir, John Lucos and other participated in the meeting chaired by Mr. Harris. The party's State committee office was inaugurated by Mr. Harris here today.

UGC television channel

KOZHIKODE JAN. 25. The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Murli Manohar Joshi, will commission the University Grants Commission's (UGC) full-time higher education television channel in New Delhi on January 26. The channel has been targeted at the graduate and post-graduate students in the country. Apart from programmes on various subjects the channel will telecast programmes on best teacher, researcher and young talent. New courses, admission formalities, awards, scholarships and academic fellowships would also be given comprehensive coverage in the channel. The programmes will be conceived by the 17 Audio Visual Research Centres (AVRCs) in the country. The one AVRC in the State is attached to the Calicut University. The various Media Research Centres of the universities will also produce programmes for the channel. The channel will also telecast programmes of the events on the campus. Cable T.V. Operators can receive the channel through the G.D.4 Digital Receiver, says a press release.

DYFI for stir

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will go ahead with its protest programme in front of taluk offices in the State on January 27. The State secretary, A. Pradeep Kumar, and the treasurer, P.K. Premnath, told presspersons here today that the organisation would defy the police notice against the programme. They said that the DYFI was holding the protest to highlight the predicament created by the policy of embargo on employment opportunities being pursued by the State Government.

Talk on insurance market

KOTTAYAM JAN. 25. The Kottayam Insurance Institute will hold a talk on `Emerging Insurance Market in India'. on January 27.

Mathew Varghese, Member, Insurance Regulator and Development Authority (IRDA) will deliver the talk at the LIC Divisional Office at Nagampadom here.

Varsity drama festival

The Baselius College, Kottayam has come first in the M.G. University Drama Festival.

The Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, and the Bharath Matha College, Thrikkakara, bagged the second and third positions respectively.

Knanaya conference

The national Knanaya History Conference would be held at the St. Ann's Higher Secondary School here.

The theme of the conference will be the role of Bishop Makil, first Bishop of the Knanaya Church, in shaping the Church.

Entries invited for award

KOZHIKODE Jan.23. Entries have been invited for the K.A. Kodungallur literary award instituted by the Madhyamam Recreation Club.

Short stories published in Malayalam weeklies and newspaper supplements can be sent. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.5,001 besides citation.

THRISSUR JAN. 25. The Governor, Sikhander Bakht, will inaugurate the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Chinmaya Vidyalayam, Kolazhy, near here, on Wednesday. The chief of the Chinmaya Mission, Swamy Tejomayananda, will release the book on the school at a function to be held in the evening at the school.

`Yajnam'

The global chief of the Chinmaya Mission, Swamy Tejomayananda, will conduct `Ramayanayajnam' from January 27 to February 1 at the Thekkinkadu Maidan here.
