Governor, CM greet people on Republic Day

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, has called upon people to resolve to make the country `stand in the line' of developed nations by 2020 and work with determination and sincere effort to achieve excellence in all spheres.

Extending his Republic Day greetings to people, he said that promulgation of the Constitution made India a Republic in 1950.

"That meant, not only the termination of long years of foreign rule, but also the emergence of new horizons of freedom, peace, amity and development. The preamble of our Constitution said it all in announcing the resolve of the Indian people, to create the Republic, and to become their own rulers. Every year on this day, the opportunity presents itself to us to renew that solemn pledge made to ourselves and to world 54 years ago."

The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, conveyed his greetings and best wishes to people and called upon them to work with dedication, integrity and unity to take the country to greater heights in future.

In a message here on Sunday, Mr. Naidu made a mention of country's high economic growth rate and said: "if we work with discipline and dedication, India will become an economic power as per Vision-2020."

Five hurt in road mishap

TIRUMALA: Five persons, including a woman, were injured when the maxi cab in which they were travelling rammed into roadside shops here on Sunday.

An eleven-member pilgrim party from Ernakulam, Kerala, including another pilgrim from Bangalore, reached Tirumala this morning. The incident occurred when the van driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a curve at the Seshadri Nagar cottages.

All the injured were admitted to hospital.

No `Dial Your CM' today

HYDERABAD: The `Dial Your CM' programme scheduled to be held on Monday has been cancelled due to the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu's follow-up programme on `Progress reports - action taken report,' according to a press release.

CM reviews hailstorm loss

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Sunday reviewed the loss incurred due to hailstorm that lashed Karimnagar district and other places on January 24. He asked the district Collector to tour the affected areas, inspect and enumerate the damage and take steps for release of ex gratia.

Chilly weather prevails

Hyderabad: Chilly weather prevailed in parts of the State on Sunday due to presence of a trough extending from Chhattishgarh to southern tip of Tamil Nadu. Sky was overcast throughout the day in Telangana which recorded isolated rainfall also. Ramagundam recorded 1 cm of rainfall.

The minimum temperature fell at one or two places in coastal Andhra and changed little in Telangana and Rayalaseema. It was above normal at many places in the State.

The lowest night temperature for the day was recorded by Arogyavaram at 18 degree Celsius. There will be isolated rain in Telangana on Monday and mainly dry weather in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, according to a forecast.

President's medal for Adilabad SP

ADILABAD: The Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat, has been awarded the prestigious President's police medal for gallantry on the occasion of Republic Day. He is one among the four police officers from Andhra Pradesh selected for this honour. In all 25 officers across the country were selected the President's gallantry medal. An officer of the 1995 batch of Indian Police Service, Mr. Bhagwat, was instrumental in containing the activities of the banned People's War. His stint as the SP saw four major encounters in which top PW leaders were killed.

DCC chief's plea to Sonia

NALGONDA: The District Congress Committee (DCC) has urged the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Sonia Gandhi, to allocate the Nalgonda Parliamentary ticket to a local candidate. In a letter, the DCC president, V. Swami Goud, has said the party lost public patronage due to allocation of ticket to non-locals. He said the ticket should be given to a local from the backward classes community.

Seminar concludes

WARANGAL: The Deputy Director, Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA), Arup Chatterjee, has stressed the need to popularise insurance schemes in rural areas and help the poor benefit from them. Speaking at the valedictory of the seminar on `Emerging trends in banking and insurance sectors' at the Kakatiya University Arts College here, Mr. Chatterjee said there was a misconception among people that insurance scheme would benefit only in case of deaths. Clients can avail multiple benefits from the various schemes, he said. "Only 18 per cent of the people in the country are covered by insurance schemes. More and more from the rural areas should be given the opportunity to benefit from insurance," he pointed out. The seminar director, O. Ghanshyam Das, the college principal, V. Gopal Reddy, and the vice principal, D. Sakria, spoke.

Felicitation function

KARIMNAGAR: Vivekanada Vidyaniketan Educational Institutions has decided to felicitate eminent personalities who have become role models for others in society, at the `Vidyaniketan Vijayotsav-2004' to be held on January 26 at its school premises. The school correspondent, S. Komuraiah, and the principal, C. Janardhan Reddy, told reporters that they would be felicitating doctors, lawyers, engineers, artistes, sportspersons, teachers, police officers and others on the occasion to motivate schoolchildren. They said a cash award of Rs. 10,000 would be presented to two students of the school -- Vivek and Venkatesh -- who had secured over 550 marks during the last SSC examination. Besides, other meritorious students would be presented cash awards of Rs. 1,000 each. School teachers would also be rewarded on he occasion.

TRS leaders hit out at TDP-BJP combine

HYDERABAD: The slanging match between the Telugu Desam Party and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi over poll alliance continued on Sunday with TRS leaders accusing the TDP-BJP combine of coming together only out of `hunger for power.'

Reacting to TDP and BJP leaders criticism of the proposed alliance between the TRS and the Congress, TRS leaders K.S. Ratnam, Chintha Swamy and Srinivas Reddy said that TDP and BJP leaders were jittery over the Congress-TRS alliance. They said that the TRS leader, K. Chandrashekhara Rao, had made it clear, time and again, that his party would have pact with other parties only if they supported the cause for separate Telangana State.

Two held, weapons seized

TIRUPATI: The Chittoor rural police on Sunday arrested two persons and recovered from them 51 countrymade weapons. The duo -- Musirikuppam Ganesan (28) of Yadamarri mandal and K. Mahadeva Gounder (39) of Bangarupalem mandal -- were arrested separately.

The Chittoor SP, Ramachandra Raju, said that the two were arrested when they were engaged in the manufacture of illicit firearms for sale each ranging from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 5000.

Explosion in house

VIJAYAWADA: An explosion of minor intensity occurred in a house adjacent to the Madiga Dandora office in the city on Sunday. However, no one was injured in the explosion. The front portion of the house was partially damaged.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and inspected the premises. The police suspect that it could be the handiwork of some miscreants who wanted to settle personal scores.

The city Police Commissioner, A.B. Venkateswara Rao, said the explosives recovered from the premises were being sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory for test.

Arrest of MCPI leaders condemned

HYDERABAD: The Marxist Communist Party of India (MCPI) has condemned the arrest of two of its leaders under the Preventive Detention Act and other statutes.

In a statement here, the MCPI State committee secretary, M. Omkar, and the member, N. Chandrasekhar, demanded unconditional release of Thandra Kumar and Younis Mian and also withdrawal of cases against them.
