PONDICHERRY, JAN. 26. The former Pondicherry Home Minister, P. Kannan, today announced that he was quitting the ruling Congress. He told mediapersons that he was leaving the party ``for obvious reasons''. His decision to quit the party was solely to keep the welfare of the people above everything else. He said he would not join any other party. ``It has never been my practice to cross over to another party''. He had no plan to revive the Puduchery Makkal Congress (PMC) either. ``It is a closed chapter''. (The PMC floated by Mr. Kannan in 2000 had since merged with the ruling Congress). The PMC won 4 seats in the Assembly elections in 2001. The development is a sequel to the earmarking of the Pondicherry Lok Sabha seat to the Patalli Makkal Katchi by the Democratic Progressive Alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, V. Narayanasamy, who returned from Chennai told newsmen that the views of the rank and file were placed before the high command.
