MANGALORE,

The foundation stone for the wharf was laid on Sunday by the district in-charge Minister, B. Ramanath Rai.
The Minister of State for Port and Fisheries, Vasant V. Salian, was present.
However, V. Dhananjaya Kumar, MP, who spoke on the occasion, asked how the Department of Ports and Fisheries was going to complete the project at an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crore when its annual budget was only half that sum.
Mr. Rai said funds would be allocated under other heads.
According to the officials of the Ports and Fisheries Subdivision here, cargo ships and boats between Mangalore and Lakshadweep are mainly using the port.
The cargo mainly includes building material and agriculture produce.
The officials said 40 ships each docked at the port and set sail from there in 2002-2003. As many as 730 cargo boats set sail from the port and 743 docked there.
As much as 30,025 tonnes of pig iron was sent to the Mumbai and Gujarat ports during the year.
Besides, the port was being used for shipping brick, cement, rice, sand, tile, kerosene, petrol, diesel, granite, coffee husk, and so on to other ports.
Copra, dry fish, salt, cement, coconut husk, mass fish, and so on from brought from other ports were unloaded here. As many as 2,298 people used the port during that year.
