BELGAUM, JAN. 27. The Lions Club of Kanbargi Autonagar will organise a mass marriage for the poor here in March. According to a press release issued by Mallikarjun Patil, secretary of the club, here on Tuesday, the objectives of the event are promotion of simple marriages irrespective of caste and religion, encouragement of widow marriage, and helping of poor families, especially in rural areas, affected by drought. The release said drought had impoverished thousands of families of farmers, and the club thought it fit to help out prospective brides and bridegrooms from these families. Those interested should register their names with the club. The applicants should submit an affidavit and a certificate from the gram panchayat concerned acknowledging that they were single. The club would provide the mangala sutra, wedding costume, and so on free of cost. Registration was open till February 29. For details, call 2453030/98440 49918. The club appealed to the public to donate money for holding the event through cheques or demand drafts drawn in favour of the president, Lions Club, Kanbargi Autonagar, Belgaum.
