PUDUKOTTAI, JAN. 27 . The Collector of Pudukottai District, Hiteshkumar Makwana, has appealed to the beneficiaries, who had obtained free site pattas, to construct their houses immediately. Addressing villagers at a gram sabha meeting held at Sembaatur near here on Monday, the Collector pointed out several beneficiaries, who had obtained free site pattas a few years ago, were yet to construct their houses. The objective of the scheme would be defeated, if they did not construct houses within six months from the date of obtaining the site. He appealed to the villagers to ensure that their wards were sent to school. The grama sabha should also ensure that the child labour was not practised in the village either directly or indirectly. He also ascertained that there was no dropout from educational institutions in the village during the current academic year. Gram sabhas were held in 498 panchayats in the district for selection of beneficiaries for various governmental assistances and loans and for motivating the people for the construction of individual toilets, Mr. Hiteshkumar Makwana said, appealing to the villagers to take an initiative for proper upkeep of the village so that the panchayat could become eligible for a special incentive of Rs. five lakhs. The Collector also urged the panchayat president, M. Mani, to take steps for setting up computer for taking maximum advantage of the information technology. Villagers could access government-sponsored schemes, if information software was set up by the panchayat. On the afforestation programme, the Collector said a special programme was being implemented to plant saplings at public places and tanks and even at individual residential houses in rural pockets. People should extend their cooperation by planting a large number of saplings in the village, he said. Mr. Mani said the voters' list had been revised and updated during the recent summary revision of electoral rolls. He also informed the Collector that eligible beneficiaries under the `Indira Awaz Rozgar Yojana' were selected, in concurrence with the gram sabha.
