BSNL service

Sir,__ It is highly deplorable to hear from the BSNL Customer Care Centre in Tiruvarur that there has been no issue of BSNL cell numbers (pre-paid) to new entrants for the past three months.

It will only help private cell companies to issue numbers to new entrants and gain profit. I don't know whether it is a strategy on the part of the BSNL to help private companies. Will the Government look into the issue and help the customers?

D. Packiriswamy,

Tiruvarur.

Train halt

Sir,__ We urge the railway authorities to halt the Pallavan Express at the Lalgudi Station for a few minutes.

Lalgudi has become the headquarters of a revenue division. It is a semi-urban area with lot of businessmen, students and farmers. It is abound with many educational institutions and industrial units. But the Rockfort Express alone stops here. Being a night train, it reaches Lalgudi at odd hours. Since people prefer the Pallavan Express, the authorities should ensure that the Pallavan Express stops at Lalgudi for a couple of minutes.

G. Kanakasabai,

president, Raiwlay Passenger's Consultative Committee, Lalugudi.

Postal service

Sir, — Thillainagar is an important locality in Tiruchi and it has many shops and private nursing homes, educational and technical institutions.

The post office here is closed at 4-30 p.m. It should be extended by an hour. The delivery office is located in an old and small building. The postal rates displayed there are not updated. A letter posted in this branch reaches Bangalore after 10 days. The Postal Department should change its style of functioning.

S. Krishna Kumar,

Tiruchi.

Traffic signals

Sir, — Automatic traffic signals are put up at several important junctions in Tiruchi with electronic countdown facility. It is praiseworthy.

However, use of cell phone while travelling either in two-wheeler or car is prohibited. But most of the riders use cell phones. The police authorities should seize the instrument or impose heavy fine to control this menace.

R. Srinivasan,

Tiruchi.

Fire safety

Sir, — In view of the worst-ever fire mishap at the wedding hall in Srirangam, the Government should make fire safety measures mandatory in all marriage halls. Educational institutions and computer centres, functioning in houses, should be made to follow fire safety norms strictly.

Besides, `Fire Safety Week' should be observed like `Road Safety Week' apart from creating awareness campaigns.

C. Ramalingam,

Tiruchi.

Parking yard

Sir, — We learn that the building plan of commercial complexes and multi-storeyed buildings are approved subject to provision of parking yards at the basement of the buildings. But, the building owners use the basement for some other purpose and leave no space for parking. This unlawful act leads to traffic congestion on narrow roads.

The Tiruchi Corporation authorities should inspect the buildings periodically and find out whether the builders adhere to the plan or not.

Many hotels-cum-restaurants around the Central bus stand use the road as their parking yard.

At the Chathram bus stand, an educational trust has constructed a very huge shopping complex without any parking yard though it has space at their backyard.

M. Sekaran,

general secretary, Tiruchi.

Train service

Sir, — Recently, I wanted to visit Nagore by travelling in the Tiruchi-Nagore Passenger. But the train was so crowded that we could not get accommodation in any of the five or six compartments. So, we cancelled the tickets and went by bus.

I request the railway authorities to run more trains from Tiruchi to Nagore or at least increase the number of compartments for the benefit of those visiting Vailankanni, Thirunallar, Karaikkal and Nagore.

H. Fariz Ahamed Khan,

Thanjavur.

Srirangam.
