Tension over police `action'

ELURU, JAN. 27. Tension prevailed in the district headquarters town on Tuesday following the use of police force for eviction of encroachments which came up on 14 acres of land belonging to the Endowment Department at Tangellamudi. The police took action after a reported assault on the Assistant Commissioner of the department, N. Vijayakumar, allegedly by a frenzied mob. The Eluru DSP, M. Ashokavardhan Reddy, said 19 persons, belonging to the CPI(M), including the party town committee secretary, B. Somajah, were arrested on the charge of assaulting the official.
