Petrol bunk owner robbed
ADILABAD: Unidentified offenders robbed the owner of a petrol filling station of Rs. 2.20 lakhs near Basar under Mudhole police station limits on Tuesday. Four assailants allegedly beat up the petrol bunk owner, Gopi, and relieved him of Rs. 2.20 lakhs in cash, kept in the bunk. A special team has been formed to nab the culprits.
Three held for selling pistol
SRIKAKULAM: The Kasibugga police on Monday night arrested three persons, including two youths from Bihar, when they were selling a pistol to a suspended RPF constable, Nooka Ramana, for Rs. 30,000. According to the Kasibugga Deputy Superintendent of Police, S.M. Basha, the trio was held at the goods shed near the railway station by the Circle Inspector, Ramana Murthy, and the Sub-Inspector, Appalaraju. Ramana was involved in more than half a dozen cases. Ten rounds of ammunition and two magazines were also recovered from the youths. They were remanded in custody, Mr. Basha said.
Life term for 3 in murder case
ONGOLE: The Second Additional District and Sessions Judge, L.D. Prasad, on Tuesday sentenced three persons to life imprisonment in the murder of Mandla Rangaswamy of Mundlapadu in Giddalur mandal. According to the prosecution lawyer, E. Rajasekhar Reddy, the four accused persons -- Marapareddy Balasubba Reddy and his brother, China Papi Reddy, K. Ramana Reddy and K. Venkateswar Reddy of Burujupally -- had hacked Rangaswamy to death at Giddalur on October 3, 1992, due to old enmity. Venkateswar Reddy died recently.
Highway robbers strike
Cuddapah: A gang of highway robbers stopped a lorry bound for Bangalore, inflicted injuries on its driver, Balaraju, and a passenger, Ramesh, with a hunting sickle and sticks and decamped with cash of Rs. 6,455 and a wrist watch at Vemula crossroads in Pulivendula constituency on Tuesday evening. The assailants ensured puncture of the tyres by placing horseshoe nails on the road before committing the crime.
Cycle rally by LEPRA Society
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Superintendent of King George Hospital, Sai Gopal, and the country head of mobilisation, LEPRA India, Naresh Choudhary, flagged of a 13-member cycling party of LEPRA Society from Britain here on Tuesday in connection with the Anti-Leprosy Day observance on January 30. The team, comprising six men and seven women, would be pedalling through the coastal and southern districts of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa to create community awareness on leprosy and to study the magnitude of the disease. The rally would end on February 6 at Visakhapatnam.
Re-installation of idols
HYDERABAD: Idols of Lord Venkateswara along with those of Goddesses -- Sridevi and Bhoodevi -- at Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt, Mantralayam, Kurnool district, will be re-installed on January 31 in the presence of Swamiji Sushmeendra Teertha and Suvidyendra Teertha, the `peetadhipathi' and `uttaradhikari' respectively, of the mutt. The temple was renovated recently at a cost of Rs.45 lakhs. The peetadhipathi has donated 52 kg of silver and the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Pratibha Trust, Mumbai, 50 kg of silver.
BJP to complain to EC
HYDERABAD: Not satisfied with the response of the Chief Electoral Officer to its complaint about elimination of genuine voters from the final list of voters published in the State, the Bharatiay Janata Party has decided to take the matter to the Election Commission. K. Laxman and G. Kishan Reddy, who would be attending a national meeting of spokesmen of the BJP in Delhi on Wednesday, would represent to the EC, they told reporters here on Tuesday.
YC to invite Gandhi siblings
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) has decided to invite Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to contest from any of the Parliamentary constituencies in the State. A resolution to this effect was passed at the executive meeting of the APYC, presided over by its president, T. Venkat Rao, here on Tuesday.
BJP to hold training camp
HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party will organise a State-level training camp for cultural artistes to be tuned for the election mode here from February 2 to 4. The participants will be trained to the campaign style through songs and other cultural items. Noted artistes, actors and musicians will be involved in training 250 participants.
Railway staff stage protest
HYDERABAD: In response to a call given by the National Federation of Indian Railways (NIFR), the South Central Railway Employees Sangh has decided to take up agitational programmes till January 31 in protest against the alleged indifference of the Centre to the demands of railway employees. Sangh members would wear black badges and participate in hunger strike near the branches of the union and organise processions and meetings near the offices of the Divisional Railway Managers, according to a press release.
Trough hovers over Rayalaseema
Hyderabad: The upper air trough hovered over Rayalaseema and the adjoining Karnataka for the second day on Tuesday. There was rain at a few places in Telangana and it was isolated in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Sircilla received a rainfall of 4 cm, Karimnagar 3 cm, Pakala 2 cm and Anakapalli, Repalle and Sattenapalli 1 cm each.
The State's lowest temperature was 14 degree Celsius at Adilabad. With the trough impact continuing, there will be light to moderate rain at a few places in coastal Andhra and isolated fall in Telangana and Rayalaseema on Wednesday.
Appreciation letter presented
TIRUPATI: The Tirupati City Crime Station inspector, K. Narasimhulu, was presented a letter of appreciation by the Chittoor Superintendent of Police, M. V. Ramachandra Raju, at a function held as part of the Republic Day celebrations here on Monday. M. Srinivasulu, a writer in the same station has been selected for the State Puraskar for his outstanding service during his 36-year tenure.
Awards for TTD staff
TIRUPATI: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) administration has selected the following employees for the annual awards presented on Republic Day for efficiency in discharge of official duty. P. N. Subbarayalu, Chief Medical Officer, N. Hemalatha, Assistant Vigilance and Security Officer, A. Srinivasulu, Sub-Inspector, T. Chenchulakshmi, superintendent and S. Basha Saheb, Jamedar. They were honoured and presented a five-gram silver dollar and an appreciation certificate by the TTD Executive Officer, Ajeya Kallam.
Teachers seek interim relief
TIRUPATI: Teachers attached to the Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation (UTF) have demanded payment of interim relief, besides appointment of a Pay Revision Commission (PRC). At the regional meeting of the UTF held here on Monday, the treasurer of the district unit, Mohana Murthy, demanded settlement of DA dues to the pensioners and revision of Provident Fund slips with the Zilla Parishad. The teachers also wanted municipal schoolteachers be made eligible for sanction of PF loans. Members from seven mandals in and around Tirupati took part.
Meritorious service awards
MADANAPALLE: The medical superintendent of the Government Hospital, Madanapalle, Sanjeeva Rayudu, and the coordinator Jayachandra Reddy, were presented awards for meritorious service, by the Chittoor district Collector, A. Giridhar, on January 26.

KURNOOL: The Kurnool Bank Employees Coordination Committee organised a `dance baby dance' contest in connection with Republic Day celebrations here on Monday night. The winners of the contest are: (below 10 years) Sravani (first), Sai Goutham (second) and Chandrasekhar (third), (above 10 years) Girinath, Sheela Rani and Vineeta (first, second and third respectively). The Manager, Union Bank, B. Sankar, distributed the prizes.
