KOZHIKODE, JAN. 27. `Traditional and appropriate technologies for the State's development' is the focal theme of the 16th session of the State Science Congress beginning at the Centre for Water Resources and Development (CWRDM) here on January 29, the CWDRM executive director, E. J. James, told a press conference today. A book on this theme would be released by the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, after he inaugurates the event. The inaugural session would be presided over by M. S. Valiathan, executive vice-president of the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). After the inauguration, the vice-chairman of the Planning Board, V. Ramachandran, will deliver the Dr P. K. Gopalakrishnan memorial lecture on history of science and technology institutions in Kerala. It would be followed by the Dr P. R. Pisharoty memorial lecture by Dr. C. D. Thatte, secretary-general of the International Council for Irrigation and Drainage. He would speak on `water for food security in the international context'. The session on the focal theme would feature talks by R. V. G. Menon (rural technology), Ashalatha Thampuram (architecture), K. S. Manilal (medicinal plants), R. Vikraman Nair (agriculture) and James (water management). Foreign delegates would also be making presentations. Presentations by promising child-scientists on the last day would be one of the highlights of the programme. More than 500 delegates have registered for the science congress.
