Padma Shri for IIT director

NEW DELHI JAN. 27 The Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, R.S.Sirohi, has been conferred Padma Shri on Republic Day.

Having completed his Masters in Physics from Agra University in 1964 and later Ph.D from IIT Delhi, Prof. Sirohi served in several posts before taking over as the Director of IIT Delhi.

A founder-member of India Laser Association, he was also the Chairman of the Indian chapter of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). Awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Award by Alexander Von Humboldt for his outstanding contribution to Optical Metrology, Dr. Sirohi was also chosen by the International Commission of Optics for the 1995 Galileo Award.

With his specialised research areas being Ellipsometry, Optical Metrology, Optical Instrumentation and Holography, Dr. Sirohi has to his credit nearly 227 papers in national and international journals.

Development conference

NEW DELHI JAN.27. The fifth annual development conference of the Global Development Network (GDN) on "Understanding Reform" being held here from January 28 to 30 is expected to attract over 1,600 participants from more than 100 countries.

The GDN has an annual conference in a different country each year where research papers by scholars and scientists are presented and assessed. The Global Development Awards competition organised by GND is the largest international contest for researchers on development. The awards programme is open only to scholars and practitioners based in developing countries, with an emphasis on recognising and supporting the work of younger researchers at the start of their careers.

Free pacemaker camp

NEW DELHI JAN.27. Project Pacer International in association with the Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research would organise a free pacemaker implementation camp for needy patients from February 2 to 6 here. All cost related to the procedure including the pacemaker device, hospitalization, medicine and consumables would be waived.

PPI is a non-profit organisation that has implanted over 350 pacemakers over the past 13 years in many countries across the globe. It is headed by an eminent retired cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr. V.K. Saini from Boston. Other core team members who would be visiting India for the camp are Ms. Susan De Turk (cardiac nurse), Dr. Salil Madha and Dr. Roy M. John.

Bank branch in school

NEW DELHI JAN. 27. Syndicate Bank has opened an extension counter at the Sector 22 Dwarka branch of Mount Carmel School. Inaugurated over the week-end by the School Secretary, Vijay Kumar Williams, the function was attended by the General Manager of the Delhi zone, N.N.Reddy.

Change in phone exchange

NEW DELHI JAN. 27. Nearly 12,400 telephone numbers of the Shalimar Bagh telephone exchange with level "2747" and "2748" will be transferred from the Shakti Nagar OCB exchange at 3 p.m. on January 28. In case of any difficulty, subscribers can contact supervisor (FRS) Shalimar Bagh telephone exchange on telephone numbers 27317311 and 27317312 or sub-divisional officer on 27470506 and 27477755.

School wing inaugurated

NEW DELHI JAN. 27. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Director-General, SC Chaube, today inaugurated the primary wing comprising of kindergarten and nursery section of CRPF Rohini Public School at 88 (Mahila) battalion at Pappankalan in South-West Delhi. The school will start functioning from the new academic session starting April 2004 and cater to the needs of around 350 children of the force personnel residing in Jharodakalan and Najafgarh area who are at present attending school at Rohini.
