Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, JAN. 27. A total of 931 self-help groups (SHGs) in Bellary district have come together to form a multi-purpose cooperative society. It will be the first cooperative society in the State to be formed by women SHGs. The Indira Gandhi Women's Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society will start functioning from Wednesday. Motamma, Minister for Women and Child Welfare, will inaugurate it. M.Y. Ghorpade, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, will preside over the function to be held at Sandur. Participating in a convention of SHGs in the district recently, Mr. Ghorpade mooted the idea of setting up a bank to cater to the needs of self-help groups. When the convention was informed that such a bank had been established in Mehaboob Nagar in Andhra Pradesh by women self-help groups, it was decided to send a team of officials and members of SHGs to that bank to study its activities and take steps to open a society in the district. There are 5,404 members who have contributed a share capital of Rs. 6.21 lakh for the purpose. A 15-member Board of Directors has been formed to govern the society. It will be a member of the Bellary District Cooperative Central Bank. The main objective of the society is to mobilise deposits. It will also implement various schemes of the Government. The society will extend loans to self-help groups and their members to open cottage industries in the district. The society has plans to launch mobile marketing services and to open retail outlets to market the goods produced by self-help groups. Besides, it has plans to construct toilets and encourage community participation in health and sanitation programmes in association with government departments. The society has decided to develop dhobi ghats and set up nirmiti kendras for construction of low-cost houses in rural areas of the district.
