dated January 29, 1954: Difficulties of Police

Editorial: In many areas of Madras City, a policeman is rarely seen. The force should be made more mobile, and given better means of communication. Police service is strenuous. Some resign, or desert, a few are degraded, some commit suicide. Some show bravery and some are killed or wounded in duty. Discipline and intelligence are all important, but the financial reward is small, making it difficult to recruit the best. These facts should be remembered when we consider the statistics of crime and punishment.
