Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to "The dynasty question" (Jan. 27). The Congressmen, instead of sharpening the strategy to deal with the BJP's challenge, nurture the futile hope of reviving the Nehruvian era.
N. Gunasekaran,
Sir, The dynastic phenomenon is not necessarily limited to politics and exists in other spheres as well, movies for instance.
Raju Nandyala,
Sir, The way Pramod Mahajan is politicising the entry of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra into politics is ridiculous. His statement that "only someone whose both parents are Indians should be the Prime Minister" is completely off the mark. A person is an Indian citizen by birth if he or she is born in India or has acquired Indian citizenship. Even if both of Rahul's and Priyanka's parents were foreigners but they were born here, they would be Indians.
Prashant Solomon,
Sir, Mr. Mahajan has disqualified Rahul and Priyanka on the ground that their mother is not of Indian origin. Will Mr. Mahajan extend the same logic to Omar Abdullah since his mother too is not of Indian origin? Did he express similar sentiments when Mr. Abdullah was sworn in as Minister in the Vajpayee Ministry?
Shivani Nag,
Sir, A party claiming that `India is shining' is disproportionately worried about the entry of "children" into politics. Omar Abdullah, Parkash Singh Badal, Navin Patnaik, M.K. Stalin, Om Prakash Chautala, Chandrababu Naidu, Ajit Singh, Vasundhra Raje Scindia, all either members of the BJP or its erstwhile allies, are part of dynastic political culture. Is there any reason why descendants of the Nehru family alone should be barred from entering politics?
Devi Vijaya,
