NEW DELHI, JAN. 28. The Rural Development Ministry has released Rs. 2,036.25 lakhs to Andhra Pradesh for installation of one lakh handpumps in the water-scarce rural areas and revival of the one lakh traditional sources of drinking water supply. The funds have been released as the Centre's share for the demand-driven component for the two schemes. As much as Rs. 938.25 lakhs has been provided for 3,000 handpumps in the water scarce areas and Rs. 1,098 lakh for revival of 8,000 traditional sources of water. The amount released under this sanction is 90 per cent of the cost of the scheme and the remaining 10 per cent is to be borne by the community or panchayats. The Ministry has released Rs. 2 crores each towards final instalment for providing safe drinking water to brackishness-affected habitations at Konaseema in East Godavari district and the fluoride-affected habitations in Kurnool district under the sub-mission projects.
