Congress to continue support for Mulayam
By Our Special Correspondent
LUCKNOW,
JAN. 28.
The Congress would continue to support the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in Uttar Pradesh, as withdrawal of support might push the Samajwadi Party (SP) closer to the National Democratic Alliance, a situation that the Congress does not want, the Congress leader, Subodh Kant Sahay, said here.
Sources in the Congress said a majority of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) office-bearers at its meeting here during the past two days, favoured withdrawal of support to the Samajwadi Party-led Government.
The sources felt that an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) could be more beneficial to the Congress.
Mr. Sahay said that secularism was a matter of faith for the Congress and its support to the SP was only to sustain that faith. That the SP had made the Congress a ``laughing stock with its attitude of ignoring the party while taking policy decisions of the State Government was another matter.''
