CHENNAI, JAN. 28. Tamil Nadu did well in volleyball, winning both its boys and girls' opening matches in the 49th National School Games, which began here on Wednesday. While the Tamil Nadu boys had some tough time against Maharashtra before they combined well to beat the rival at 25-18, 25-15, the girls scored a comfortable 25-9, 25-7 victory over Navodaya Vidyalaya Sankatan. In the basketball matches, Abilesh scored 18 points to steer Karnataka to a 56-45 victory over Haryana in the boys' section and Mannai scored 16 points to take Chandigarh past Haryana 33-20 in the girls' section. Mrs. Susan Mathew, Secretary, Sports and Youth Welfare, inaugurated the events. Gnanadesikan, Secretary, Higher Education, presided. The results: Volleyball (under-17): Boys: Tamil Nadu bt Maharashtra 25-18, 25-15; MP bt Andaman 25-18, 25-18. Girls: TN bt Navodaya Vidyalaya 25-9, 25-7; Bengal bt Andaman 25-11, 25-8. Basketball: Boys Gr. A: Maharashtra bt Uttaranchal 55-9; Gr. B: Karnataka bt Haryana 56-45; Girls: Gr. A: Delhi bt Uttaranchal 23-6; Gr. B: Chandigarh bt Haryana 33-20.
